Puberty is the transition from childhood to adulthood, or which is popularly named as ‘coming of age’. The age at which it happens and the way people celebrate their adolescence differs from place to place depending on their customs. Some rituals are surely going to make you wonder how can they exist.
1. Bullet Ant Gloves.
In Brazilian Amazon rainforest, a tribe named Satere-Mawe collect bullet ants from the forest, sedating them with a herbal medicine, then weave them into pairs of gloves, stringers pointed inwards. Any person turning 13 is made to wear the gloves for 10 minutes. The tradition continues for several months to initiate the lesson a life without suffering is not worth anything.
2. Breast Ironing.
Cameroon in Africa perform this one of the most heinous rituals to protect the young girls from rape and se3ual harassment. The procedure involves the chest being pounded with hot objects such as large stones, a hammer, or a spatula to compress the breast tissue.
3. Drinking Elders’ Semen.
These kind of rituals are too gross to exist. But unfortunately boys of Etoro tribe of Papua, New Guinea have to go through this homos3xual ritual to initiate adulthood. In this the boys at the age of 7 has to drink elder’s sperm till they turn 17.
4. Bar and Bat Mitzvah.
Not all places have scaring rituals on reaching puberty. Young Jewish boys and girls celebrate this at the age of 13 and 12. They show their commitment to Jewish law. Then follows a reception that celebrates young person’s accomplishment and hard work.
5. Sweet 16.
This is the most celebrated event in America. At the age of 16 they attain the freedom of driving a car or for that matter freedom for every legal thing along with puberty.
6. Inuit Tradition.
In North Baffin Island, Inuit boys and girls hit puberty between the ages of 11 and 12 go out into wilderness to test their hunting skills and get accustomed to harsh weather.
7. Land Divers.
In Vanuatu, a small island in the middle of South Pacific, the rituals consist of diving exist for boys coming of age. He needs to jump off a 98 foot tall tower with a vine tied to their ankles. If any miscalculation takes place, might lead to broken bones.
8. Crocodile Scarring.
This puberty ritual exists among the Sepik River tribe of Papua New Guinea. They use 2 centimetres long razor cuts to achieve the crocodile shape. This is performed to teach discipline, focus, and dedication.
9. Separating A Son’s Blood From Mother’s.
In the highlands of Papua New Guinea, the boys are made to go through a bloodletting process, believing it would separate the mother’s blood they got during childbirth. The process includes shoving canes through their throats or reeds up their nostrils or arrows into their tongues.
10. Shackles to Prevent Movement and Calorie Loss.
Among the Okrika tribe in Nigeria big is considered beautiful. The girls reaching puberty are kept in a flattening room for 5 days and force-fed with fatty foods.
11. Frog Poison – “Nature’s Death Juice”.
The Amazonians go through this harsh ritual where a dangerous frog poison after the area is burned in preparation. The they can endure the pain they become qualified as hunters. Sadly this kind of rituals still exist.

In Malaysia, girls spend years preparing for this day, learning to read Koran until the age of 11, when at the mosque they recite the final chapter infront of friends and family.
