But the Rush family has got a brilliant idea as to how to tell their kids that Santa Claus doesn’t exist so that it hurts them the least and moreover, they become happy at this discovery. “In our family, we have a special way of transitioning the kids from receiving from Santa, to becoming a Santa,” wrote Leslie Rush, a high school history teacher from El Paso, Texas. “This way, the Santa construct is not a lie that gets discovered, but an unfolding series of good deeds and Christmas spirit. When they are 6 or 7, whenever you see that dawning suspicion that Santa may not be a material being, that means the child is ready.” Leslie wrote the story over ten years ago but it’s still as relevant today as it ever was.
