Margot Robbie Says There’s Another Harley Quinn Spinoff In The Works

Since debuting in last year’s Suicide Squad, fans have been waiting for Margot Robbie to reprise her role as Harley Quinn. And it sounds like she might be working on her own spinoff movie.

In a recent interview with MTV, Robbie revealed that she’s developing her own spinoff surrounding the fan-favorite DC Comics character, one that will be “totally separate” from Suicide Squad 2Gotham City Sirens and the proposed Harley/Joker spinoff film.

“Yeah, I’ve been working on it for two years now.” Robbie shared. “I mean, it’s hard to kind of talk about it because all the stuff is kind of under lock and key. But I’ve been working on a separate spinoff Harley Quinn thing for a while now.”

Through a process of elimination, this project sounds a lot like the female-centric spinoff that was announced in May of 2016. Robbie has been attached to produce the project, which would feature Harley Quinn alongside various female heroes and villains, including Batgirl and the Birds of Prey.

Robbie’s other comments in the video certainly seem to support that possibility, with her expressing her hope that Harley will form her own “girl gang.”

“I want to see her with other women” Robbie revealed. “I kept saying when we were shooting Suicide Squad, I was like ‘She needs her girlfriends.’ She needs other girls around her because she loves that. You see that in the comics, she loves meeting people, any people. But she needs a little girl gang.”

In the years since the initial development, some had wondered if this Birds of Prey spinoff was even in the cards anymore, or if it had instead been folded into David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens. But the project does still have Shut In’s Christina Hodson writing the script – and it sounds like Robbie is still interested in bringing it to life onscreen.

But with so many Harley-centric projects in development, and Robbie recently saying that she will reprise the role next year, what film will it be in?

“There’s a lot going on right now” Robbie explained. “And I’m not sure…Honestly, I don’t think anyone knows what’s the next thing that’s going to happen. But I think everyone’s keen to get Harley back on screen, so everyone’s working on lots of different versions of what that could be.”
