There are still places in human brain which are a mystery like the subconscious part. But over the years scientists have discovered many shortcomings and secrets which are hidden deep inside the psyche. So let’s go through a journey inside our own mind and find out what psychology has for us.
1. Our memories never remain the same.
With passing years, memories fade. But human brain also has a habit of colouring them with imaginations. As a result of which psychology says everytime a memory crosses our mind it is in some altered form. We cannot exactly remember what has happened in the past.
2. You can have only a few true friends.
People studying the psychology of human brain have come up with a something called the ‘Dunbar’s number’, which gives a number of people with whom we can have good relations. According to that no matter how many friends we have on social media we can maintain close ties with 50-200 among them.
3. The more we are busy, the more happier.
You might be well acquainted with how brain don’t like being idle. In ideal times human beings become impatient and dissatisfied, recalling all the bad things, losses and mistakes of life.
4. We cannot memorize more than 3-4 things at one time.
You must have noticed phone numbers or debit card numbers are divided in 4-digit sections. It is because human brain can register only 3-4 things at a time. That too only for 20-30 seconds unless we keep on reminding our mind.
5. Our visual perception of things totally differs from their actual appearance.
That is why we are able to read so fast. We only observe the first and last letters, the middle part is automatically filled in by brain based on past experiences. Try reading this for better example: “It dsoen’t mtater in waht odrer the ltetres apepar in a wrod, if the fsirt and the lsat lteters remian in palce.”
6. 30% of our day is spent in day-dreaming.
Human psychology tells people who day dream are more creative and productive. They are also very good at solving problems.
7. Food, sex and danger cannot be ignored.
There’s a thing called “ancient brain”. What it does is after scanning the environment puts up three questions: Can I eat it? Can I have sex with it? Can I be killed by it?.
8. No matter what, we need choice.
Even if we always end up buying the same brand or kind, we love to browse through choices. Because it’s just our curiosity to be sure we aren’t missing out on something.
9. Many every-day decisions are taken unconsciously.
We would love to believe that everything in life is well thought out and planned. But most of our daily chores are unconscious. We do it out of habit.
10. Multi-tasking isn’t a thing.
Psychology shows that our brains can only concentrate on one thing at a time or nothing good comes out of multitasking. Well there’s a slight exception to it. If among the two, one thing is the type we do everyday then it is possible. Like talking while walking.
11. Our eyes prefer shorter columns, even though it reads longer lines faster.
No doubt articles divided in short columns are more convincing to the eyes but interestingly you read longer lines which take up the whole width of the page faster.
12. Our brains imagine things from above and tilted.
This is just how our brain functions. It demonstrates things from the above and tilted to the left side. If you were asked to draw a glass you would definitely draw an overview.
