One of the major things that make the human race so superior is their hands. But we often fail to acknowledge it’s importance, in particular, the importance of our thumb. Besides our ancestors (yes, the chimps!) no creature on Earth has this miraculous feature. But did you know that your thumb can reveal a lot about your personality? Keep reading on to find out!
First, let us have a look at the overall structure of our hands.
Humans have a pair of opposable thumbs which also serves as a distinguishing feature possessed by them.
All the primates have a pair of limbs but none of them possess such a unique feature. Let’s have a look the details of our hands.
Our hands consist of three distinct divisions. The carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The bones on top of your fingers are called the phalanges, then there’s the metacarpals and the carpals. Clearly, your thumb is the shortest of the bunch.
What are the advantages of having opposable thumbs?
The thumb is the only digit on our hand which is opposable. It means that it can easily turn back against the other four fingers.
And this is the reason we can grab hold of things easily. Without our thumbs, we’d be just like the other animals not being able to use our hands to the fullest extent. The thumb in conjunction with the other fingers makes the human species dexterous in the world.
But we know this, don’t we?
